How to 'cure' a chalkboard

When we renovated our kitchen, one of the things I really wanted was a chalkboard wall. I'd seen it on some American television programme and thought it would be the coolest thing ever, what can I say, I'm easily impressed! I'd even planned which section of the wall it would be on before we'd even looked at kitchens.

What I didn't realise is you can't just section off a piece of wall, paint it with blackboard paint then voila, all done. So, you know when you buy a chalkboard and write on it then rub it off, but can still see the writing faintly on it? Well the board needs to be cured, sounds more fancy and technical than it is, but very easy and simple to do.

Here's my step by step instructions which will work on walls and shop bought blackboards, perfect also for the blackboards that I sell in my Etsy shop too!

So, if you have already used your board it's easily fixed, take a wet cloth and wash all the chalk off the board. Leave your board to dry thoroughly first, before starting the process below.

Ideally, if on a wall, maybe consider putting something on the floor first to catch any chalk dust.

On the clean dry board, take a piece of chalk and turn it on its side, now use the chalk to cover the entire board will chalk.

Once the board is covered, take a clean dry cloth, I find a microfibre one is best as it collects more dust, and wipe the board clean.

Basically, that's it! Very simple, a bit messy but hey, you should be able to write on your chalkboard without leaving an imprint when you rub it off.

Just use this method every time you want to give your blackboard a good clean and start again.
